FAITH IN ACTION| YOUR FREE BIBLE DEVOTIONAL FOR FRIDAY Brandy N. Morrison, June 16, 2023November 18, 2023 “O God, whom I praise, do not remain silent, for wicked and deceitful men have opened their mouths against me; they have spoken against me with lying tongues.” PSALM 109:1-2 DEVOTIONAL O God, whom I praise, do not remain silent, for wicked and deceitful men have opened their mouths against me; they have spoken against me with lying tongues. These words from Psalm 109:1-2 are a plea for God’s help against those who speak falsehoods and seek to harm us. In times of trouble, we may feel like we are surrounded by enemies who are trying to tear us down. But we can take comfort in the fact that God is with us and that He hears our prayers. The psalmist acknowledges that his enemies are speaking lies against him. They are not simply voicing their opinions or expressing their disagreement with him. Instead, they are intentionally spreading falsehoods in order to harm him. This is a tactic that has been used throughout history to discredit and undermine those who stand for what is right. It is a tactic that is still used today. In the face of such opposition, it can be tempting to fight fire with fire. We may be tempted to respond with anger, to lash out with our own accusations and insults. But the psalmist shows us a different way. He turns to God for help, recognizing that only God can truly defend him against his enemies. This is a reminder that we need to keep our focus on God in times of trouble. When we are under attack, it can be easy to get caught up in the drama, to become consumed with anger and fear. But if we allow ourselves to be consumed by these negative emotions, we risk losing sight of God’s presence in our lives. We risk losing our connection with Him. Instead, we need to turn to God in prayer, as the psalmist did. We need to ask Him for help, for protection, for strength. We need to trust that He hears our prayers and that He will be with us through the storm. But we also need to remember that God’s help may not come in the way that we expect it to. We may be hoping for a miraculous intervention, a sudden turn of events that will make everything right. But God’s help may come in more subtle ways. It may come in the form of a friend who offers us words of encouragement, a stranger who shows us an act of kindness, or a moment of insight that helps us to see things in a new way. Whatever form God’s help takes, we need to be open to it. We need to be willing to receive it, even if it doesn’t come in the way that we had hoped. We need to trust that God knows what is best for us and that He will guide us through the difficulties that we face. In the end, the psalmist’s prayer is a reminder that we are never alone. Even when we feel surrounded by enemies, even when we feel like the whole world is against us, God is with us. He hears our prayers, He sees our struggles, and He will help us to overcome them. So let us turn to Him, let us trust in Him, and let us praise Him, even in the midst of our difficulties.
