5 STEPS TO OVERCOME NEGATIVE THOUGHTS WITH JESUS CHRIST Brandy N. Morrison, September 6, 2023November 18, 2023 Negative thoughts can be overwhelming and have a significant impact on our mental and emotional well-being. However, as followers of Jesus, we have a powerful ally in overcoming negativity. By turning to Him, we can find strength, peace, and renewed hope. In this blog post, we will explore five practical steps to help you overcome negative thoughts with Jesus. 1) RECOGNIZE & ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR NEGATIVE THOUGHTS The first step in overcoming negative thoughts is to become aware of them. Take a moment to reflect on the thoughts that are plaguing your mind. Are they rooted in fear, doubt, or self-criticism? By acknowledging them, you can begin to address them head-on. Once you have identified the nature of your negative thoughts, it is important to find the source of them. Are they based in a past experience, a current situation, or simply a fear for the future? Understanding the origin of your negative thoughts can help you to understand why you are feeling the way you do and learn how to cope with these thoughts. 2) TURN TO GOD IN PRAYER Once you have identified your negative thoughts, bring them to God in prayer. Pour out your heart to Him, expressing your struggles and asking for His guidance and strength. Remember that God is always ready to listen and provide comfort. Share your burdens with Him, and trust that He will help you overcome them. When you bring your negative thoughts to God in prayer, remember that you are not alone. God is always with you and He cares deeply for you, no matter what your situation looks like. He knows your thoughts and feelings, and is ready to hear your requests and give you clarity and direction. Allow yourself to trust in God’s faithfulness, and be open to whatever He wants to say to you. Ask for His help to release your burdens and gain a better perspective. Offer your worries and doubts to Him, and believe that He does have a plan for you and is with you every step of the way. He is a good Father and He loves you, so come to Him with confidence knowing that He will meet you in your difficult moments and lead you to a brighter future. 3) SEEK WISDOM IN GOD’S WORD The Bible is a powerful tool for combating negative thoughts. Take time each day to read and meditate on God’s Word. Seek out verses that address the specific negative thoughts you are facing. For example, if you are struggling with fear, find passages that speak of God’s love, protection, and faithfulness. Allow His truth to replace the lies that negativity often brings. The Bible is a powerful and transformative force that can help us to replace our negative thoughts with positive truths. Not only can we strengthen our faith by reading and meditating on scripture, but we can also arm ourselves against anxiety, fear, and doubt. Reaching for the Bible when anxious or fearful thoughts arise can be both a mental and spiritual exercise. Find specific verses that speak to the negative thoughts you have and that remind you of God’s presence and protection. Let His words and promise of hope and love replace the lies that negativity brings. Make an effort to read and meditate on the Bible regularly so that you can continue to find strength and peace amidst the noise of negative thoughts. 4) SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE INFLUENCES Negative thoughts can often stem from the negative influences around us. Being around people who constantly bring us down or reinforce negative beliefs can exacerbate these thoughts and make it even harder to overcome them. That is why it is crucial to surround ourselves with positive, uplifting individuals who will encourage and support us. By being part of a community that shares similar values and beliefs, such as a Bible study group, attending church services, or seeking out Christian mentors, we can find guidance and support on our journey towards overcoming negative thoughts. Being immersed in a positive environment can provide us with the strength, encouragement, and understanding needed to challenge and overcome those negative thoughts that hold us back. These positive influences can help us replace negativity with hope, self-belief, and a renewed mind. 5) PRACTICE GRATITUDE & FOCUS ON GOD’S GOODNESS Gratitude is a powerful antidote to negativity. Take time each day to reflect on the blessings in your life and thank God for His goodness. When negative thoughts arise, intentionally shift your focus to the positive aspects of your life. Cultivate a habit of gratitude, and you will find that it becomes easier to overcome negativity. Gratitude is a transformative practice that has the power to counteract negativity in our lives. Making an intentional effort each day to reflect on the blessings in our lives and express gratitude to God can shift our focus away from the negative and onto the positive aspects of life. By acknowledging and appreciating the goodness and abundance we have been given, we create a mindset of abundance and contentment. This shift in perspective allows us to see beyond the negative thoughts and circumstances, providing a fresh outlook and renewed hope. As we cultivate a habit of gratitude, we begin to reframe our thinking and rewire our brain to focus on the positive, encouraging us to look for the silver linings in difficult situations. Our gratitude becomes a powerful force, reminding us of the goodness in our lives and helping us overcome negativity with a more positive and resilient mindset. IN CLOSING Overcoming negative thoughts with Jesus is a journey that requires intentionality and faith. By recognizing and acknowledging your negative thoughts, turning to God in prayer, seeking wisdom in His Word, surrounding yourself with positive influences, and practicing gratitude, you can experience the transformative power of Jesus in your life.
