FAITH IN ACTION| SPREADING THE GOSPEL MEASSAGE Brandy N. Morrison, October 10, 2023November 18, 2023 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 The verse “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8) serves as an eternal blueprint for the mission entrusted by Jesus to His disciples before ascending into heaven. This verse encapsulates the essence of our purpose as believers. In this article, we’ll delve into the keywords found within this powerful scripture to explore the profound significance they hold for us today. THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT At the core of this verse lies the concept of divine empowerment through the Holy Spirit. Believers have the privilege of having the Holy Spirit dwelling within them, bestowing the power and courage required to share the gospel message. This empowerment liberates us from reliance on our own human strength and abilities, allowing us to manifest the teachings of Jesus in our daily lives. STARTING IN OUR JERUSALEM As the verse suggests, the mission begins in Jerusalem. This was the geographical center of religious and political activity during Jesus’ time. In our context, “Jerusalem” may refer to our immediate surroundings—our neighborhoods, workplaces, or schools. Just as the disciples started where they were, we too are called to be witnesses for Christ in the places we find ourselves, spreading His message to those closest to us. EXPANDING TO JUDEA & SAMARIA The mission then extends to encompass all of Judea and Samaria, representing the regions beyond Jerusalem. In our lives, this expansion may equate to reaching out to our city, state, or even our entire country. Our responsibility is not limited to those who resemble us but encompasses everyone around us. It entails sharing the gospel with diverse groups and embracing the inclusive nature of Christ’s teachings. TAKING THE MESSAGE TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH Lastly, the mission culminates with the mandate to reach the ends of the earth. This signifies a global perspective and the imperative to share the gospel message with every nation and people group. Fulfilling this may involve embarking on mission trips, supporting missionaries, or simply engaging with individuals from varied cultures and backgrounds. It’s a call to step beyond our comfort zones and display Christ’s love universally. BEING FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT To effectively fulfill this mission, we must first be filled with the Holy Spirit. This requires a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and complete surrender to His will. Only when we are spiritually empowered can we confidently step out into our “Jerusalem,” Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth. The Holy Spirit equips us with the wisdom, discernment, and strength we need to be Christ’s witnesses. EMBRACING BOLDNESS WITH FAITH As we venture into “Jerusalem,” we must be bold in our faith. Boldness is the byproduct of our connection with the Holy Spirit, emboldening us to share the gospel unreservedly. It involves a an unflinching willingness to go wherever God calls us. This call might lead us to our neighbors, across the street, or to foreign lands. It necessitates sacrificing our own comfort and convenience for the sake of obedience to God’s calling, trusting that His plan extends beyond our comprehension. IN CLOSING The verse from Acts 1:8 serves as a timeless reminder of our mission as believers. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are called to begin in our “Jerusalem,” expand to encompass “Judea and Samaria,” and ultimately take the gospel message to the ends of the earth. Let us be filled with the Holy Spirit, bold in our faith, and committed to fulfilling this divine mission.
