DO YOU KNOW WHY CHRISTIANS SHOULDN’T CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN? Brandy N. Morrison, October 28, 2023November 18, 2023 Unveiling the truth behind Halloween, this blog post delves into the reasons why Christians should reconsider their participation in this widely celebrated holiday. As followers of Christ, it is essential to examine what the Holy Bible says about celebrating Halloween and understand its pagan origins. Let us explore the history, significance, and implications of Halloween, urging Christian parents to make an informed decision for their children. THE PAGAN BEGINNINGS OF HALLOWEEN Halloween traces its roots back to ancient Celtic festivals, particularly Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season. This pagan celebration involved bonfires, costumes, and offerings to appease spirits. Over time, these practices merged with Christian traditions, resulting in the modern-day Halloween we know today. HALLOWEEN’S HISTORICAL EVOLUTION As Christianity spread, the Church attempted to replace pagan festivals with Christian ones. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as All Saints’ Day, intending to honor all Christian saints. The evening before, known as All Hallows’ Eve, gradually transformed into Halloween. THE HOLY BIBLE & HALLOWEEN While the Bible does not explicitly mention Halloween, it does provide guidance on how Christians should approach pagan practices. In Deuteronomy 18:9-14, God warns against engaging in divination, witchcraft, and other occult practices. As Halloween’s origins are steeped in pagan rituals, Christians should exercise caution. THE DILEMMA OF CELEBRATING HALLOWEEN As Christians, we are called to be set apart from the world and to live according to God’s commandments. Celebrating Halloween, with its focus on darkness, fear, and the supernatural, contradicts this calling. We cannot serve two masters – God and the world – simultaneously. PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN Christian parents face a significant challenge when it comes to Halloween. Allowing our children to participate in trick-or-treating or embrace the holiday’s festivities may inadvertently expose them to pagan influences and values that contradict our faith. As stewards of their spiritual well-being, we must prioritize their spiritual growth over societal norms. EMBRACING ALTERNATIVE CELEBRATIONS Rather than participating in Halloween, Christians can explore alternative ways to celebrate the fall season. Hosting harvest parties, organizing community service events, or focusing on gratitude and thanksgiving can provide meaningful alternatives that align with our faith. THE POWER OF DISCERNMENT Discernment is crucial when deciding whether to celebrate Halloween. Each Christian must prayerfully consider their convictions and seek guidance from the Holy Spirit. What may be acceptable for one believer may not be for another. Ultimately, our choices should reflect our commitment to honoring God. SHINING THE LIGHT OF CHRIST Instead of blending in with the world during Halloween, Christians have an opportunity to shine the light of Christ. We can use this time to share the love of Jesus, engage in acts of kindness, and demonstrate the true meaning of our faith. Let us be a beacon of hope amidst the darkness. IN CLOSING In conclusion, Halloween’s pagan origins and the Bible’s teachings on avoiding pagan practices should give all Christians pause when considering whether to celebrate this holiday. As followers of Christ, we are called to be set apart and to prioritize our relationship with God above all else. By making an informed decision and seeking alternative ways to celebrate, we can honor our faith while still engaging with the world around us. It is the easy choice to go along with the ways of this world, and sometimes it’s easy to be taken in by these things that seem basically harmless, but that’s when we must re-evaluate situations like this in alignment with God’s Word. Until next time my dear readers, I ask you to please remember to pray for the victims of the mass shooting in Maine, and for the grieving families as well. Also, please continue to pray for the people of Maui. My heart is sad, because of the recent tragic events in Israel, it seems as if the world has forgotten the people suffering from the Maui Wildfires. I ask you to please remember them in your hearts and prayers as well. God bless you all.
